The volume of trash in the Treasure Coast area has increased following the statewide stay-at-home order enacted in March.
According to Melissa Yunes , a Port St. Lucie spokewomen. She has stated, “More people staying at home are generating more garbage, Yunas said. Garbage trucks are filling up faster and taking more trips to the landfill.” in a TCPalm article.
Justin Gregorios, owner and founder of Vero Beach Junk Removal has responded on how he and his team are dealing with the deluge of trash.
“The volume of trash has really increased” Gregorios said.
He said that the large amount of trash being generated is the result of many residents staying home and shopping online.
Gregorios said the biggest increase came from residential homes, something that other waste collectors have also seen.
The companies Treasure Coast counties have hired for waste collection are prioritizing garbage pickups over curbside trash such as yard debris and large items.
Gregorios said he and his team at Vero Beach junk Removal have seen a lot of the recycling waste is from Amazon boxes or other packaging.
Gregorios response on how his team are responding to the pandemic is that his junk removal team are now wearing masks and gloves and are social distance as much as they can. “Our trucks and equipment are being cleaned more as well” says Gregorios.
“Our main focus is trying to keep everyone safe during this pandemic,” Gregorios said.
